It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Dr. Koo Jawon, a distinguished Korean expert in the Korean Language Program at the School of Asian Studies of Beijing Foreign Studies University. Due to ineffective medical treatment for his illness, Dr. Koo Jawon passed away in Beijing on September 22, 2025, at the age of 56.

Born on August 30, 1969, in Seoul, Republic of Korea, Dr. Koo Jawon was a man of profound erudition and unwavering dedication. He came to China as a young scholar and has spent nearly three decades here. He obtained both his Master’s and Doctorate degrees from the Department of History at Peking University, where he studied under the guidance of Professor Yue Qingping. He developed a deep affection for Chinese history and conducted profound research in the field. Since September 2009, Dr. Koo served as an international faculty member in the Korean Language Program at the School of Asian Studies (formerly the School of Asian and African Studies) of Beijing Foreign Studies University, contributing 16 years of tireless service to our academic community. His tenure at our university made him the longest-serving foreign expert in the history of the Korean Language Program, and he dedicated his heart and soul to the cause of Korean language education in China.

As a scholar, Dr. Koo Jawon was unparalleled in his depth of knowledge and rigor. His work in the fields of Chinese ancient history, Sino-Korean relations, and translation between Chinese and Korean was nothing short of exceptional. Over the years, he authored numerous academic papers and contributed to several pivotal works, including The History of Chinese Civilization and The Road to Peace in East Asia, furthering academic exchange between China and Korea. His lifelong passion for scholarship never wavered, and even in his final moments, he was still diligently working on collaborative translation projects, such as the Platform Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch.

As a teacher, Dr. Koo Jawon approached teaching with meticulous care and unwavering dedication. He was known for his humility, his calm demeanor, and his open-mindedness. To his students, he was both a strict instructor and a cherished confidant, respected and loved by generations of learners. He was honored with the title of the “Most Beloved Foreign Teacher” at Beijing Foreign Studies University in 2013. Under his guidance, our students flourished, winning top honors in national competitions such as the Korean speech contests, essay competitions, and Chinese-Korean translation competitions. He was also instrumental in organizing academic exchanges like Korean debate competitions and recitation contests with partner institutions, providing invaluable opportunities for students to grow both academically and personally.

Dr. Koo Jawon was more than a scholar; he was a true cultural ambassador. With his profound affection for China, his selfless dedication and his exceptional scholarship, he built a bridge of understanding and friendship between China and Republic of Korea. His sudden passing is a tremendous loss to the School of Asian Studies, to the Korean Language Program, and to the field of Sino-Korean cultural and educational exchanges. We have lost an outstanding scholar, a respected teacher, and a sincere friend.

In the words of the ancient saying, “A teacher’s legacy is silent, yet the path they carve is enduring.” Dr. Koo Jawon’s scholarly legacy and profound dedication to teaching will forever be etched in the history of Beijing Foreign Studies University and will always be cherished in our hearts. We hereby mourn his passing with profound sorrow and extend our heartfelt condolences to his family.

May Dr. Koo Jawon rest in peace!

In solemn mourning of Dr. Koo Jawon, a memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on September 24, 2025, in the Lan Hall, Babaoshan Funeral Home, Beijing.
